FAQ

Is Hollywood more important than Bollywood?

The biggest challenge for any film producer is how to make sure his movie gets noticed by audiences.

Problem is, there are many films competing for viewers' time and money. If you don't stand out, your chances of being seen are slim.

But what is the secret to making a movie successful. What makes an actor famous? Or a director? It's not only talent, but also luck. The best actors may be the best, but they will not succeed if they are writing bad scripts.

Films can be divided into two categories: blockbuster films with large budgets or independent productions. Producing and distributing blockbuster movies can cost hundreds of millions. They are made by huge studios, who want to make sure their movies reach as many people possible. But, these high-budget films are more appealing to older audiences.

Independent films are usually smaller productions that can be funded by investors or individuals. These films focus on niche markets or cater to particular tastes. These films are usually easier to market and produce. But, they aren't necessarily cheaper to view. Most indie films are difficult to find.

We need both types? Are we going to need both big blockbuster movies or small independent films? Well, I think that Hollywood is actually bigger than Bollywood. Hollywood makes almost twice the number of movies each year than India.

Why is it called Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith founded the first film industry in California in 1887. It was named in honor of its Los Angeles location, known at the time as "Hollywood".

The name stuck because it was such an exciting place for people to visit. People would travel all the way from other countries to see what was happening.

Hollywood is still a big part of our culture. Movies, television shows and music videos are all part of our culture. They are all called Hollywood.

Does Hollywood make more money from foreign sales than domestic sales?

Yes, but only a little. Around 17% of total revenue came from foreign sources in 2017. Domestic revenues accounted to 83%.

In fact, more than half the world's people live in overseas markets.

This means that many people, even those who don't watch movies at home, will still want to see yours.
