FAQ
Why is it called Hollywood?
D.W. Griffith established the first film industry in California, 1887. It was named for its Los Angeles location, also known as Hollywood at that time.
It was an exciting place to visit and the name stuck. It was a place that people would travel from all walks of the globe to experience.
Hollywood is an important part of culture today. We have movies and television shows, music videos, commercials and so on. We call them all "Hollywood."
Why aren't more filmmakers using crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter?
Crowdfunding is a great way to connect with potential investors.
But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel they need someone to stand by them.
They don't believe anyone should invest in them, as they have not proven their worth yet.
Instead, they spend months focusing on their project and hoping that someone will notice.
Then, once they finally launch their campaign, they realize they didn't prepare properly.
Instead of receiving thousands of dollars, they receive a few donations.
Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?
Many indie filmmakers believe that distributors will take their films.
Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.
However, this is seldom the case. Distributors often benefit from independent filmmakers.
They may delay a film's release until after the awards season is over.
They also delay the release date for a low-budget film until the summer blockbuster movie season has begun.
Distributors will also attempt to keep movies away from viewers until they have spent hundreds of dollars on popcorn, tickets, or candy.
They don't want these profits to be lost.
Can I start my own distribution company?
No. Without being a distributor, you cannot legally establish a distribution company.
You must follow certain rules, even though you are not distributing films of other people.
You can't, for example, charge different prices to different theaters. Also, you cannot charge different fees to different customers.
Also, you can't offer your services to any other company.

How To
How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame
In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.
If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.
The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.
Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.
You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove the name of your from the list.
How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?
One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Family members may nominate you to be a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.
Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?
The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It honors those who made history through film.
What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
